Frequently Asked Questions

The word gilet, derives from the Spanish 'Jileco' or 'Chaleco'-  a sleeveless jacket, much like a waistcoat or vest that forms part of traditional Spanish clothing.

While similar in function and style, the main difference between a gilet and bodywarmers is the weight of the garment. Gilets are usually more lightweight in design and can be used as a mid-layer, or worn though warmer seasons. Body warmers tend to be bulkier and are more often used as outer layers.

Gilets are hugely versatile and appropriate at many times and places. Dubarry has a wide range of gilets which are suitable anywhere from the shooting field to sofa, stable to greenhouse, work desk to the gym.

Depending on the design, there are many ways to style a woman’s gilet. Sportier, quilted gilets can be worn with sportswear or casual jeans. Our knitted, wax and leather gilets are perfect for the shooting field worn over lightweight knits or cotton shirting, either as an outer layer or mid layer under a coat. Knitted gilets are a very popular style worn with jeans and Country boots or ankle boots, inside or outside throughout the year.

The Dubarry Ladies’ gilet collection combines style with functionality. Made with comfort, warmth and breathability in mind, they combine technical know-how with flattering design. From quilted layers or sporty cover-ups to waxed waistcoats that make a statement in the field, Dubarry gilets offer weather-beating practicality at its very best.
